Ranked Movement

I don't know what the deal is with all this. I saw another post where someone was 'fixing' 8th edition to put out a homebrew called 9th Age . It isn't that I don't applaud what they are doing if that is what they want to do. But I shudder to think about playing a system with errata, an upgraded magic system, and a host of special rules - no, for me simple is the key. I love what they've done with Age of Sigmar. The biggest argument that people make (despite the fact GW actually destroyed the world) is that it is no longer ranked combat in a heroic fantasy game. So while there were people playing Kings of War previous to this, now it is officially the Games Workshop Ranked Combat Battle System if you listen to the people posting on the interwebs. But why? Why do I have to play an entirely different system to use my models on movement trays? What else don't they like about it? Is it simply the wheeling and moving troops around in big blocks? Is it the...

The Night of the Goblins

Not going to write really deep on this, but it is on my mind. Great discussion on Bell of Lost Souls today about could 40k borrow a thing or two from Age of Sigmar. To me I really don't want to hurt people's feelings but the current 40k point system forces you to constantly escalate. If you aren't fielding the Best In Slot choices and spamming them, you will lose to the player that does. It is a point based system and we will work to exploit it. Or at least we should in the world of competitive play. I told the anecdotal story of my brother's Night Goblins. He was buying, assembling, and painting all of these cool little goblin mushroom freaks with their kick ass black robes and bad moon shields. They looked awesome. But.. it is a game after all. I couldn't wrap my head around it. THEY ARE TERRIBLE. Like under no circumstances would they ever do anything at all in the game. Maybe some filler on the board or whatever, but they just weren't an effective force ...

Big Changes in Age of Sigmar

Honestly I am still trying to get my head around all the internet hate for Age of Sigmar. What is it about the game people really don't like? I'll address some concerns in this post. They destroyed the much loved fantasy setting that has been around for 30 years. How exactly did they destroy it? It all still happened right. The Old World as we know it is gone. That isn't going to stop you from drawing on the resources of the setting though. The new rules specifically mention playing games over countless worlds and dimensions spanning a range of fantasy battles that much trumps the Old World. It is back to the notion that was originally borrowed from the work of Micheal Moorcock. The battle against Chaos spans time and dimension. It is a war that rages across multiple settings. We've always known the Realm of Chaos touched more places than this one little map- now they are trying to open it up. For me it is a boon. Let's say I decided to run my High Elf ar...

War Machines in Age of Sigmar

Well, I've been trying to figure this out because with a dwarf/elf army it becomes pretty important- usually like first turn important. After our first game it became apparent that war machines are very dangerous in Age of Sigmar. Something has me puzzled though- and it is part because of the streamlined rules and in part because of conflicting reports I've uncovered on the internet. Let's start at the beginning. WARSCROLLS & UNITS “All models are described by warscrolls, which provide all of the rules for using them in the game. You will need warscrolls for the models you want to use.” “Models fight in units. A unit can have one or more models, but cannot include models that use different warscrolls. A unit must be set up and finish any sort of move as a single group of models, with all models within 1" of at least one other model from their unit.” When I first read this it seemed very apparent that you would never have more than one unit in a warscroll. B...
